The slightly awkward conversations worth having before you book anything, so you can get to know each other and plan a trip that works for both of you. 💕
Okay, so this is how it usually starts.
You post in Travel Girls Club that you’re going somewhere, another girlie replies saying she wants to go too, you start chatting and suddenly you realise that your dates match. You want to see similar places, and you’re both sending each other videos saying, “We HAVE to go here!”
And then comes the obvious question.
Should we just go together?
Yasss, girl!! Honestly, I LOVE this. This is exactly what Travel Girls Club is all about. Meeting girls you probably would never have crossed paths with otherwise and potentially ending up somewhere on the other side of the world together.
But before you both get too excited and start booking flights at midnight, there are a few things worth talking about first. Not because we want to take all the fun out of it. Quite the opposite.
You just want to make sure that your idea of the trip is somewhat similar. Because you can absolutely adore someone online and then discover that she wants to wake up at 6 AM every morning while your idea of a holiday starts somewhere around brunch. 😂
Nothing dramatic. You just want to get to know each other a little better before pressing book.
So, let’s talk about it. 💕
I know, I know. If you’ve already been chatting, suddenly scheduling a video call can feel weirdly official. Do it!
You can learn SO much from actually talking to someone. You get a much better sense of their personality, their energy and how naturally the conversation flows.
And no, this doesn’t need to turn into an interview. 😂 Talk about the destination, tell each other what you’d love to do there, chat about what kind of trip you’re imagining and just see how it feels.
You’re potentially about to travel together. You should at least know what each other sounds like outside a WhatsApp chat.
If you happen to live close enough to each other, even better. Meet for a coffee or a drink before the trip.
This is one of those conversations that is SO much easier to have before you book anything. Not in a “So, how much do you have in your bank account?” kind of way. Obviously. 😂 But you do need a rough idea of what kind of trip each of you is imagining.
You can both say, “Let’s go to Thailand!” and be picturing two completely different holidays.
Both can be amazing trips. They’re just not necessarily the same trip.
You don’t need an exact daily spreadsheet. You just want to know that you’re somewhere in the same universe.
Money is much easier to talk about before the trip than when one of you is staring at a restaurant menu thinking, there is absolutely no way I’m paying this every night. 😅
Okay, this one is important because people travel VERY differently.
You definitely don’t need to like all the same things. Actually, I think travelling with someone who is slightly different from you can make the trip more fun because you both end up doing things you might not have chosen yourselves.
You just want to understand what the other person is imagining.
If your dream holiday is lying by the pool for half the day and hers involves visiting nine temples before lunch, it’s probably useful information to have. 😂
If you’re sharing accommodation, talk about what you’re both comfortable with.
Maybe one of you loves beautiful hotels and sees accommodation as part of the experience. The other would happily stay somewhere super simple and spend that money somewhere else. Again, there’s no right answer. You just want to find something you’re both happy with.
And while we’re here, you might as well mention anything that could make sharing a room interesting.
You don’t need to have identical habits, and you definitely don’t need to go out together every single night. It’s just good to understand what the other person actually enjoys.
That conversation is much easier to have over coffee before the trip than outside a club at 3 AM. 😅
I’m putting this one here because food becomes surprisingly important when you travel with someone.
Maybe you’re the girl who starts researching restaurants three weeks before the trip and already has twelve places saved on Google Maps. Maybe your new travel buddy could happily eat the closest thing available and move on with her day.
Some people genuinely plan parts of their trips around food. Others really don’t care that much. Neither is wrong. But if eating at cute restaurants is one of the things you’re most excited about and she wants to grab something quick every night, you’re probably going to notice.
Two hungry girls trying to agree on where to eat is already difficult enough. We don’t need to make it harder.
This one is actually really important, especially when you’re travelling with someone for the first time. Just because you decided to take a trip together doesn’t mean you need to spend every minute of every day together.
That’s completely normal. I actually think trips are much easier when both people feel comfortable saying:
“I think I’m going to do my own thing for a little while and I’ll meet you later.”
There doesn’t need to be anything wrong. Sometimes you just want a little moment to yourself. And then you meet again later, have dinner together and have completely different stories to tell each other about your afternoon. I actually love that.
Nothing kills the holiday mood faster than trying to remember who paid for which taxi three days ago.
I’ve been using it with friends for years and it makes everything SO much easier. Everyone adds what they paid, you can split expenses between whoever was involved, and at the end it calculates who owes what. It helps us keep track of who owes what; we still agree how and when to settle up.
You can obviously use whatever system works for you, but I’d definitely agree on something before the trip.
For bigger expenses, like flights and accommodation, it’s easier when everyone pays their part directly or transfers the money straight away. Simple, clear, and then you can forget about it and enjoy the trip.
Maybe one of you already had the destination in mind and the other girl is joining. Maybe you’re planning everything together from zero. Either way, make sure you both actually say what you want to do.
Please don’t be the girl who says “I don’t mind, whatever you want” about everything and then arrives and secretly hates the itinerary.
I LOVE sending reels back and forth before a trip. Planning the trip should be part of the fun too.
Okay, slightly less exciting topic, but stay with me. Before paying for anything expensive together, check the cancellation conditions.
Nobody wants to imagine cancelling a trip while they’re planning it. But life happens. Write down what you’ve agreed about shared costs, cancellation and refunds, even if it’s just a message you both can refer back to. Check the booking terms too, so you understand what happens if plans change.
I wouldn’t have one person financially responsible for absolutely everything.
Easy.
Okay, I have to put my founder hat on for one second. 😂 Travel Girls Club is literally here to help women meet, find travel buddies and build real friendships around the world. And I LOVE seeing girls from the community actually travel together. That is exactly what I want to happen.
Meeting through the community is a starting point, not a guarantee that someone will be the right travel buddy for you. Take time to get to know each other, meet somewhere public if you can, and keep access to your own money, documents and bookings.
But when you’re meeting someone for the first time, just use the same common sense you’d use with anyone new.
And most importantly, trust yourself.
If you’ve been talking to someone and something just doesn’t feel right, you don’t have to travel together simply because you already talked about it. You’re allowed to change your mind.
You don’t need someone who likes every restaurant you like, sleeps at exactly the same time, has exactly the same budget and wants to visit every single place on your list. Honestly, finding that person might be impossible anyway. 😂
Because sometimes those differences are exactly what make the trip more fun.
That’s part of travelling together. So if you meet a girl in Travel Girls Club, start chatting and suddenly find yourselves saying:
“Wait… should we actually do this?” Maybe you should.
So you can spend the actual trip enjoying yourselves. And then go make those memories. Because that random “I’ll be there too!” comment might turn into one of your favourite trips and, who knows, one of those friendships that lasts way beyond it.
And if you love the idea of travelling with other women but you’re not quite ready to plan an entire trip with someone you met online yet, that’s completely fine too. You can also explore the group trips we’re planning and join the waiting list. When the details are ready, you can see the itinerary and decide whether that kind of shared adventure feels right for you.
There’s no one right way to do it.
Don’t let “I have nobody to go with” become the reason you keep postponing the places you really want to see.
And if you’ve ever met a travel buddy or a real friend through Travel Girls Club, please share your story with us. I genuinely LOVE hearing what happens after those first little messages in the community.
Maybe your next travel bestie is already somewhere in the community. You just haven’t met her yet.
She started Travel Girls Club in 2022 and plans and hosts every group trip.
Small group trips, hosted with care, for women who would rather not wait for someone to come with them.
